Notes:
Wars with question marks are assumptions made because of the age of the individual. These are probably the most likely wars, but there is no verification. If you can verify any of these please let me know. In wars the vast majority of soldiers in uniform were young men, between 18 and 30 years of age. A small number of officers were older, in their 40’s and 50’s. The Civil War and WW II had a much higher total percentage of men in service than other wars, and the age range tends to be wider for those conflicts.
Historical debate continues about the official dates for the Indian Wars, starting as early as 1812 in the East to 1890 in the West. The Blackhawk Wars referred to two different Indian conflicts, one in Illinois in the 1830’s and one in Utah in the 1870’s. All the individuals listed here should have been veterans in uniform, not civilian pioneers who may have been involved in Indian conflicts as well.
Most of this information was obtained from the cemetery ledgers, the monuments themselves, and from the Sherwood American Legion who posts the flags for Memorial Day. None of these sources are comprehensive. If you know of other individuals in this cemetery who were U.S. war veterans please let me know who they are and during which conflict they served so that they can be recognized on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
